The front porche or veranda is an integral part of many South African homes, where our delightful climate makes it desirable to have this transitional space where you can comfortably sit and enjoy the outside, without being exposed to the sun and rain.

Some of the old farmhouses I've visited have wrap around verandas with massive stone and concrete floors, and massive roof overhangs, where there is comfort to be found on even the hottest summer day.

On a more suburban level the BBQ is a national passtime, and the BBQ is inevitably located on a veranda like area that offers some shelter from the elements for people to sit and eat and socialise, usually with a swimming pool in the near vicinity too.

Keep them coming, Dan! I'm finding great inspiration from this blog!

All the very best.

What about Houses in the Caribbean? I plan to build my own house in Jamaica in 18 months time.
It is impossible to find any plans or good ideas for smaller properties made from re-enforced concrete and other materials that not only are affordable, green, esthetic to look at and have the open plan flavour with a large covered porch. Obviously it has to withstand the hurricanes and the odd shakes and quakes. 12x8 meters (96 square meters for downstairs and the same for upstairs, 2 bed/2 bath, with open plan living/dining and kitchen area. Utility room, garage for 1 car. Also it would be nice be able to add another room or two at a later date.
Any idea or information where I can find some good ideas?
