This Craftsman style house won Home of the Year in the Best in American Living Awards (BALA).
February 12, 2014 – A custom home built in the Mission Hills community [of San Diego] has...been named Home of the Year at the Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Award winners were announced during the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, Nevada...In its 30th year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry.
The American Craftsman house was designed by IS Architecture of La Jolla and built by Hill Construction Company of San Diego.
The Mission Hills community is one of the oldest and best architecturally preserved neighborhoods in San Diego. American Craftsman, a 1910 house, had a complete architectural makeover enlarging the home significantly, yet in keeping with the historical integrity of the neighborhood feels like it has always belonged. There is so much emphasis in today’s marketplace on doing something new…the objective was to build something old with historical charm and integrity. There is no better way to do that than with an architectural style that has represented the individual in craftsmanship since the 19th century.
Design emphasis was placed on period correct details including leaded windows, fumed oak casework, a copper hammer hood in the kitchen and antique fireplace surrounds. As you move through the house, you will see custom milled wood detail forming symmetrical balance in every room. This gives weight from floor to ceiling, a comfort that always feels grounded, full of life. The interiors are grand but warm and welcoming, a perfect place for the retired owners to host their family and friends.
“The design detail that went into recapturing the charm of the home’s original era is amazing,” said BALA Judge Chairman Victor Mirontschuk, president of the EDI International in New York City. This is not the first time American Craftsman has received recognition for its design and build. In summer 2013 the project won a regional Gold Nugget award and in the fall was the cover story in Arts & Crafts Homes magazine. Hill Construction Company has remodeled hundreds of high end custom homes throughout the Western United States. The company is headquartered at 2204 Garnet Avenue in San Diego.
