A studio and home office occupy the second floor of this freestanding garage, adding flexibility. Plan 498-3
A freestanding garage is a good solution if your lot has the space -- it can allow you to move the automobile away from the front of the house and shape a courtyard or patio for outdoor living. If the garage includes a studio or bedroom and bath it can become an in-law or guest suite, as shown in these examples. In harsh climates an enclosed connection to the house will be desirable.Plan 479-6
is a Shingle style garage inspired by fire lookouts.
A band of windows wraps the studio on the upper floor. This "micro cottage" is a very efficient 262 sq. ft. (not counting the space for the car) and could function as a charming getaway cabin
The second floor living space in Plan 140-101
is 565 sq. ft. and opens to a covered deck.
In Plan 498-3
(also shown at the top of this post), which is 1024 sq. ft., the entrance to the upper floor is at the side.
The layout includes room for two home offices, which could double as bedrooms.
