Getaway Cabins

By Dan Gregory

This chalet-like log cabin captures the vacation idea.

The dream cabin brings you in touch with nature while keeping you comfortable. Here are two designs that do this job well.

1. Log Cabin Chalet, Plan 549-6. This design by Delta Projects Latvia, SIA, which is shown above, makes extended stays possible thanks to spacious storage rooms on both floors for household supplies, bedding, sports

equipment, and other necessities. The main living space opens to a house-wide porch so the house can take advantage of good weather. Front and rear balconies give second floor bedrooms extra allure.

2. Classic High Country Cabin, Plan 452-3. Designed by architect David Wright, this porch-wrapped getaway is

simplicity itself. A two story living-dining area and kitchen, with a sleeping loft over the bedroom and bath

at the rear. As with the chalet-style cabin, the ample porch lets the house expand in good weather. Metal

shutters slide across the windows and doors on the ground floor to keep everything secure when the house is unoccupied.
