Pet-Friendly Floor Plans

By Aurora Zeledon

Your pets deserve thoughtful spaces, too.

Got pets? Your furry friends deserve a home that will fulfill their needs, too. That's the beauty of picking out your home design (and customizing it even more, if you so choose): everything can be exactly as you want and need.

When you're considering what a dog or cat requires in a home layout, think beyond just a big yard or room for a scratching post. With pets come a whole host of supplies: food, leashes, collars, medications, brushes, toys, and much more. Where will you put all of these things? Today's best new house plans provide lots of thoughtful storage spaces that help you keep everything organized.

Many new designs include large mudrooms. Usually located between the garage and the house, these highly functional areas may include a bench (handy for sitting down to remove your shoes), lockers (perfect for storing backpacks or schoolwork), and closets (where you can hang heavy coats). These areas also make excellent storage centers for pet supplies.

New plan 430-171 (above) also provides room under the stairs, giving you an out-of-sight place to stash large bags of dog food or a collection of chew toys. The nearby laundry room includes a sink where you can rinse off a small dog's muddy paws, a nice alternative to getting one of the main bathrooms marked up with dirty paw prints.

Cats love the sunlight. A home that includes a sunroom, like plan 20-2285 above, provides a spacious room for kitties to stretch out in the warm rays. The sunroom also connects to the master suite, so you get a relaxing room that can be used for reading, crafting, working from home, or just about anything else.

How about if your puppy needs to use the potty in the middle of the night? Consider a plan with direct access to the backyard from the master suite, like plan 938-88 above. That way, you can take doggies outside without having to trek through the whole home (and wake up fully). One and done.

Speaking of heading outside, it's much easier to take dogs for a walk when you've got an exit close to where you store leashes. But what if you don't want to hang those up in the foyer within sight of guests? A door to outside near the mudroom makes it much simpler to leash up and go. Plan 20-2284 above provides exactly that, with a handy door that leads to the yard next to a closet. You could also stash poop bags and dog treats here to have everything at hand.

Rustic beauty 942-43 above also features this arrangement. (Humans will love the huge patio in back, which includes an outdoor kitchen and tons of space to host a casual barbecue party.) Can't you picture this plan in a mountain location?

Also great in a hilly area, plan 23-2628 presents a wall of windows to capture a stunning view. On the side of the home, a screened porch offers a bright spot to sit outside on a lovely day while still being protected against insects or sudden downpours. Dogs, cats, and even birds will enjoy the view from here.

Love curling up with your computer and furry friend to binge-watch some television? Plan 1042-18 features a charming daybed that works perfectly for this. On the main floor, the mudroom opens out to a porch for (you guessed it) easy walks.

What about dogs who like to get really muddy outside? Certainly you don't want them tracking that inside. Plan 928-298 anticipates the need with an outdoor shower on the walkout lower level. Also down here, a kitchenette makes it easy to grab drinks or a snack while playing a game of pool or watching a movie. You'll even find an exercise room that opens out to one of several patios.

Got multiple cats? You may want a dedicated room where they can roam on cat trees. Plan 901-143 above offers a "toy room" that sits near the front of the home and adjoins the living room. Of course, this area would also make a great playroom for children or perhaps a home office for telecommuters.
